Digital Marketing: What NOT To Do!

A new year is a great time for a new business - or a great time to refresh an established business! If one of your goals for 2023 is to get results from digital/social media marketing, you'll definitely want to stay tuned! We often see blogs and articles of what to do in order to succeed at digital marketing, but it's a good idea to know what you shouldn't be doing as well. Let's take a look at 5 things you shouldn't do if you want to succeed in 2023:

1. Post without a plan: Content is obviously the basis of social media marketing, and most people know you should consistently post content in order to gain a following. Posting without a plan in place, however, won't work to get your content to your audience. You'll need to know which platforms are used most by your target audience, the best posting times, the type of content to post, and more. It may take a little preparation, but put a plan in place for your posting this year.

2. Avoid setting goals: Goals give you an idea of what you are working towards with your marketing. You may want to reach a certain number of followers by the end of the year or perhaps post to social media a particular number of times per week. Simple goals like these can be very effective in measuring your progress and motivating you. If you avoid setting goals for your marketing and/or business, you may find yourself wondering if your digital marketing matters or is making an beneficial impact on your business.

3. Fake it: Social media users can spot a fake person a mile away. Be honest and real with your followers about what you know or don't know. Show them your successes and some failures (especially humorous ones)!

4. Ignore Analytics: Analytics are the tools by which you measure your social media reach and engagement. Remember those goals you should be setting? Analytics are one tool to measure those goals to see how you are doing. Analytics will also tell you what time and days to post as well as the most popular types of content that you post.

5. Use identical formats for all of your posts: Do you find yourself posting a simple photo and caption of your product often? Be sure to change it up! Users come in a variety of personalities and they all enjoy different formats of content. Create variable posts that include photos, videos, music, questions, and other fun engaging activities. Keep your posts interesting, and your audience will enjoy them and keep returning.

Now that you have learned a few things to avoid, begin working on creating a plan and trying new marketing tactics. You'll likely go through a trial and error period where you can discover what works best for you and your audience.

Do you have a digital marketing plan?

If so, how often do you revisit your plan?
