Social Media Marketing: The Basics

Social media is simple: create a graphic or take a photo and post it with a caption and maybe a few hashtags. Social media marketing, however, is more intentional and time consuming. As we all know, time is money. It's important to ensure you are spending your time wisely when it comes to marketing your business on social media.

First of all, you'll need to know your audience. Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal customer and pay attention to the gender, age, and lifestyle of that person. This will help you determine what platforms, types of content, and what posting times will likely work best to get the attention of your target audience.

Now what? Do your research! Find out more about your ideal customer. Are they likely to browse Facebook in the morning before work, or are they watching reels in between classes? It's important to meet your potential customers where they are. If your social media efforts aren't resulting in customers, your time is being wasted.

Once you know more about where to post, focus on your content. Provide valuable and interesting content to your audience in order to create a community. When users feel connected to you and your business, they develop trust and loyalty to your brand. They are more likely to not only utilize your products and services, but to share them with others as well.

Once you begin regularly posting, you'll need to pay attention to your analytics. This data will give you an idea of what works and what doesn't in your social media marketing. Analytics show what posts and posting times are most popular. In order to get your posts seen by more of your audience, you'll need to increase engagement. Analytics are key to success in social media marketing.

As stated above, social media marketing must be intentional to be productive. Time and effort are imperative, but your efforts will pay off if you are consistent. However, if you are feeling overwhelmed, it may be a good idea to hire a social media manager.
