Social Media for Your Non-Profit

Social media is an essential tool for non-profit organizations.

Non-profits may benefit from a presence on multiple social media platforms by bringing brand awareness and creating an online community.  Many social media users will support causes they care about on social media by sharing information and events created by the non-profit. Let’s investigate some positive strategies for using social media for your non-profit.

1.     Make your goals and objectives clear

What is the purpose or objective of your non-profit organization? Social media users are usually eager to support causes that are important to them, but you must ensure that users know exactly what the purpose of your non-profit is.  Use social media platforms to educate potential followers on your purpose as well as the reason your work is important. Engage users to find out their ideas and how they might be able to best provide support. Social media platforms also provide insights to create measurable data to assist you in determining when you meet goals of supporters or engagement.

2.     Your target audience

Determine who your target audience consists of. Is your message likely resonate with young adults, mature adults, pet lovers, or perhaps motorcycle riders? Knowing your target audience will affect what types of social media platforms you use as well as what type of content you create.  Once you have narrowed down your target audience, find out what social media platforms they are utilizing most and join those platforms. You should be able to discover what types of media work for that type of audience (long-form videos, short videos, text, photos, etc.) and create that type of content most often.

3.     Plan and schedule valuable content

Plan your content in advance to make it more likely that you will post consistently. Having a planned schedule of content will ensure that you have time to create and post the content.  Creating the content and scheduling it to post automatically at the appropriate time is even better for ensuring consistently. The content that you create and post should bring awareness to your organization and interest your audience. Educational posts and posts that offer true stories of work your organization has accomplished is a great way to engage your audience.

Social media can be very time consuming, and with a non-profit organization you are likely to be busy. It’s important to choose the most impactful platforms and posts to focus your time.  If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed by social media, hiring a social media manager may be an option for your organization.
